FEEDER 8 EXTENSION TO FREDERIKSTED COMPLETED

March 10, 2003 – The Water and Power Authority announced Monday that it has completed work extending Feeder 8 of its electrical system to Frederiksted.
Feeder 8 connects the Richmond plant with Henry E. Rohlsen Airport via underground lines. The extension to Frederiksted is via aerial lines.
According to a release, "the Feeder 8 extension is a temporary measure and will be the primary feed to Frederiksted town, with Feeder 10 in reserve, until underground lines are placed in that section of the island in the future." Meanwhile, the temporary extension "will improve the reliability and quality of electrical power to Frederiksted and significantly eliminate the number of outages caused by line failure," the release stated.
WAPA has installed an automatic recloser and surge arrestors "to protect the underground portion of Feeder 8 from exposure to the aerial lines," it said, so that any fault from the overhead portion "will be automatically insolated."
Working from Jan. 27 to Feb. 16, WAPA crews transferred most of Feeder 10's electrical load and a small section of Feeder 9's load to Feeder 8. A ceremony marking the project's completion was held on Friday, the release said.
