Carabana Theater Ensemble to Bring "Queen Mary" to St. Thomas Campus
St. John's Carabana Theater Ensemble will bring its production of "Queen Mary" to UVI's St. Thomas campus for two presentations on Friday March 7.
Performances in the UVI Little Theatre in the CA Building are slated for noon and 8 p.m. The shows are free to the University community as well as the general public. These are the only scheduled presentations of "Queen Mary" on St. Thomas.
"Queen Mary" is a dramatic performance featuring music and movement. It depicts the life and times of the women who led the St. Croix Labor Revolt of the 1800s. This play features UVI student Dwight Browne and UVI graduate Vanessa Olivacce.
The UVI Student Government Association and the student activities office on the St. Thomas campus are hosting the productions in celebration of International Women's Month.

Noted Civil Rights Attorney to Speak on Both Campuses
Noted civil rights attorney Fred David Gray will make presentations on March 10 and 11 at UVI. Gray, who successfully defended Rosa Parks and served as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s first civil rights lawyer, is described as an entertaining speaker who focuses on the importance of diversity and who can make individuals proud of their cultural heritage.
Gray will make two presentations on Monday, March 10, on the St. Croix campus. The first is scheduled at noon in the Theatre (Evans Center room 401). It is for the UVI community. A second session is planned at 7:30 p.m. in the UVI cafetorium, and the general public is invited to the evening presentation. Gray's St. Thomas campus presentation is slated for noon on Tuesday, March 11, in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110). It is open to the UVI community and the general public.

Health Fair and Blood Drive Slated March 5 on St. Croix Campus
"See Your Way To Healthier Living" is the theme of UVI's Annual Health Fair and Blood Drive, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at The Greathouse on the UVI St. Croix campus. The general public is invited to participate. Activities planned for the day include: blood donations, glucose, blood pressure and HIV Testing, and testicular and self breast examination instructions. Vision screening and information sharing by Peer Health Educators are also planned.
Workshops planned include: "Care Enough to Count Calories." by Alice Henry, R.D., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; and "Dancersize." by Roy Newton of Paradise Gym, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. An open forum, titled "Here's to Your Health," will be moderated by Arakere Prasad, M.D., from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first 15 people to register for each of the workshops will receive gifts. French and Spanish Cuisine Featured at Foreign Language Week Event
UVI's foreign language area of the humanities division will celebrate National Modern Foreign Language Week with a presentation of French and Spanish cuisine, dance and song from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at the Sports & Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are $3.
Open House for High School Students, Officials Set March 7 on St. Thomas
UVI will host an Open House for high school seniors and juniors, and school officials on Friday, March 7, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The Open House is designed to provide a first-hand look at the wealth of academic opportunities, professional development initiatives and extra-curricular activities offered at the university.
UVI faculty, staff and students will be on hand to answer questions and provide perspective on the unique UVI experience. Informational sessions and a Fair Exhibition are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Lunch is slated from noon to 1 p.m. and campus tours will be offered 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information contact UVI's Office of Student Recruitment at 693-1224.
Lecture to Focus on Works of Navy Bandmaster Alton Adams
Kristi Kienberger, a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, will present a lecture entitled "Marches of Alton Adams (1889-1988), First Black Navy Bandmaster," at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, March 7, in the Music Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Kienberger will discuss Mr. Adams' career through his works, and his appointment as Navy Bandmaster in 1917, when the Danish Virgin Islands were transferred to the United States as a territory. The lecture will share correspondences received by Mr. Adams from John Phillip Sousa, W.C. Handy, and the like. For more information contact Humanities Chair Dr. Lorna C. Young-Wright at 693-1347.
Workshops to Focus on Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plan Training
Training workshops on sediment and erosion will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at the SBDC Training Room upstairs in Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The program is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, V.I. Planning and Natural Resource Department's Coastal Zone Management Program and V.I. Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc.
