Feb. 9, 2003 Officials at the Puerto Rico Seismic Network have confirmed an increase in earthquake activity locally since the beginning of February.
On Saturday, two quakes rattled the Virgin Islands within hours of each other.
A spokesman at the Seismic Network said the first quake, which measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale, was recorded at 6:33 a.m., while the second one , at 8:11 a.m., was slighter weaker measuring 3.2 on the Richter Scale. Both occurred between 5 and 15 miles off the north coast of St. Thomas.
The Network reported an even stronger earth tremor on St. Thomas Friday, again to the northwest of the island. Fridays event was measured at 4.0. On Feb. 3, the most powerful of the recent tremors was felt about 60 miles northwest of St. Thomas with a magnitude of 4.2. Officials say a 3.5 magnitude tremor was recorded on Feb. 1 about 15 miles north of St. Thomas.
