UVI President to be Honored with Other Educators in Washington, D.C.
UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster will join other honorees on Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Washington, D.C., when the Miller Brewing Company unveils its 2003 Gallery of Greats Calendar. The calendar features 11 prominent African-American educators from public historically black colleges and universities. Dr. Ragster is one of two female educators to be included.
Miller Brewing Company has produced the Gallery of Greats Calendar for more than 20 years in an effort to acknowledge and honor individuals who have made significant impacts within the African-American community. Congressmen Jesse Jackson Jr. and Chaka Fattah, along with Sens. Herb Kohl and Arlen Specter will also be honored at the reception for their support of higher education.
The new calendar is also featured on page 107 of the January 2003 issue of Ebony.
UVI’s Online Library Catalog Features New Look, Easier Access
The online catalog for UVI's libraries, UVIAL, now has a new look. The libraries have installed new search software called iPac from Epixtech, Inc.
The new search tool is a friendlier, more streamlined retrieval interface providing users with enhanced search features for fast, easy access to the libraries' holdings.

Palmieri to Showcase Music from "La Perfecta" at Reichhold Show Saturday
Virgin Islands fans of salsa, charanga, mambo and jazz can expect a special treat when Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and bandleader Eddie Palmieri takes the stage Saturday, Jan. 25, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Palmieri is expected to showcase music from his latest CD, "La Perfecta."
Palmieri's music "drives audiences wild, filling them with an incredible urge to dance," says Reichhold Director David Edgecombe. "That night, Latin music will be queen and Eddie will be king," Edgecombe added. "We're expecting a most memorable night … with music that is jovial and soul-wrenching."
Palmieri broke into the music scene in the 1960s at New York's Palladium Ballroom. After gaining popularity as a pacesetter in Afro-Caribbean music, Palmieri later solidified his stance as a solo artist. His discography contains almost 30 albums, including "Masterpiece," his collection with the late Tito Puente.
Special travel-show packages are being offered for individuals from St. Croix and Puerto Rico who wish to attend the Palmieri performance. Packages — including round-trip travel on Cape Air or Mermaid Fast Ferries, accommodations on St. Thomas, ground transportation and show tickets — range from $172 to $395. The Palmieri performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Reichhold Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

Little Theatre Issues Casting Call for Spring Production of "The Merchant of Venice"
UVI's Speech Communications and Theatre area has issued a casting call for actors wishing to try out for roles in the planned spring Little Theatre production of William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice."
Tryouts are open to the the UVI community as well as the general public and are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 27 and 28, at the UVI Little Theatre located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus.
The classic story of the merchant who is faced with losing a "pound of flesh" has parts for 10 men and eight women, ranging in age from students to adults. Some of the lead characters include Antonio (the Merchant), Shylock, the Duke of Venice, Portia and Jessica.
Director Michael Prenevost said the Little Theatre will present a version of the play that has been "updated to the 1970s." And while it does feature "abridged Shakespearian language," this version includes a definite "disco" feel.
The production will be presented to the public on April 4, 5 and 6, and April 10, 11 and 12. For more information contact Prenevost at 693-1355.
February 7 Registration Deadline Set for All Prospective 2003 Graduates
Friday, Feb. 7, is the deadline for all prospective 2003 UVI graduates to apply for graduation.
A meeting for prospective graduates on the St. Croix campus has been scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, in Room 401 of the Melvin Evans Center. For more information contact the Academic Services Office at 692-4158.
On the St. Thomas campus, students apply for graduation at the Registrar's Office. Student meetings on St. Thomas will be scheduled in the near future by the Alumni Office.
Cooked Dishes Sought for Afternoon on the Green
Afternoon on the Green 2003 is scheduled for Sunday, March 9, on the golf course of the St. Thomas campus. As UVI's annual food, family and fun event, Afternoon on the Green will feature food from around the world. This year's theme is "Inaugural Kallaloo." Live entertainment and children's games are also planned.
Contributed dishes will be entered in the food competition, unless otherwise noted. Categories for judging include main dishes/ meats/poultry, seafood, soups, side dishes, breads, native drinks, pastries/ sweets and vegetables/ casseroles.
Volunteer food servers with health cards are needed. To contribute a cooked dish, volunteer as a food server or for more information call the UVI Office of Institutional Advancement at 693-1040.
