40th Anniversary Celebration, Roast and Toast a Sellout
Congratulations to all who contributed to the sell-out success of Saturday's 40th anniversary celebration and Roast and Toast of president emeritus Dr. Orville Kean at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. The event was a sellout with more than 300 individuals turning out. More than $50,000 was raised to establish an endowed scholarship for international students at UVI in Dr. Kean's honor.
Voter Registration Set Oct. 2 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
The university community and the general public are invited to participate in a voter registration drive on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Student Center from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on UVI's St. Croix campus. The St. Croix Student Activities Office is sponsoring the event. For details call 692-4188.
UVI Employees Recognized for Excellence in Performance
Three employees of UVI's Research and Public Service (RPS) component received special recognition awards for quality and excellence in performance above and beyond what is expected during the component's recent annual retreat.
Honored were Christy Loomis of the Eastern Caribbean Center's Conservation Data Center, Toni Thomas of the Cooperative Extension Service and Mary Joe Williams of the Small Business Development Center.
Also honored as nominees for the award were the Aquaculture Program and Dr. Robert Godfrey of the Agricultural Experiment Station, and Clarice Clarke and Christine Henry of the Cooperative Extension Service.
Reichhold Center Sets Auditions for 'Folk Nativity' Oct. 2 and 3
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will hold open auditions for "Folk Nativity: A Caribbean Christmas Musical" on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2 and 3, beginning at 6 p.m. each day. Actors with a talent for song and dance are needed, according to Reichhold Director David Edgecombe.
"We are especially looking for individuals who will commit to the hard work necessary to make the musical an excellent production," Edgecombe said.
"Folk Nativity" will be presented on November 30 and December 1 at 8 p.m. as part of the Reichhold Center's 2002-2003 season. Edgecombe will serve as director and Josephine Thomas-Lewis will be musical director and producer. Interested individuals should contact the Reichhold Center at 693-1550 or Josephine Thomas-Lewis at 779-2339.
SBDC Seminar on 'Managing Your Credit' Set Oct. 9
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and First BankVirgin Islands, in conjunction with the New Image Foundation Corporation Policy Board, are offering the second in a series of quarterly financial seminars entitled "Dollars and Sense."The goal is to reach all sectors of the community concerning personal finances and planning for the future.
The second seminar, "Managing Your Credit," will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at the Nisky Center (Suite 720). Music Department Slates Fall Concert Oct. 12
The UVI Music Department will present its annual fall semester concert entitled "Christ on Li'l Broadway," at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Christ Church Methodist (Market Square) on St. Thomas.
Performing will be the university's premier concert band, under the direction of Austin A. Venzen, professor, and UVI's all male singing group, the "Men's Glee Club." A number of guest artists from St. Thomas schools will also perform.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and are available at the UVI Bookstore, the Humanities Office and from UVI band members.
Legal Assistant Certification Exam Course Offered
UVI's Community and Personal Development unit will offer a Legal Assistant Certification Exam review course on St. Thomas on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 21. The course will include presentations by guest lecturers, mock exams and study group sessions. The fee for the eight-week course is $995, which includes all materials.
