4-TIME OLYMPIAN WILLIAMS WINS V.I. OLYMPIC RUN

June 24, 2002 – All around the world Olympic Day Runs are held in June to celebrate the idea and ideals of the Olympic Games. Approximately 90 runners took part Saturday in the two-mile V.I. Olympic Day Run, which circles the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus twice.
Marlon Williams, vice president of the V.I. Olympic Committee and four-time Olympian, was on the scene to welcome participants and assist with the event, and he was so excited about the number of participants who showed up that he decided to jump in, said Wallace Williams, race organizer. So, going to the half-mile mark in the race, Marlon Williams, 45, took the lead and held it to the end to record a time of 11:54.35.
Morgan Locke, a swimmer with the Blue Marlin Swim Club, chased 13-year-old Troyson Raymond of the V.I. Express Track Club through the first mile and then overtook him to take second place overall in 12:35.43.
Sherma Aurelien, a freshman track runner at Barton County Community College
in Kansas and a St. Croix Educational Complex High School graduate, was the first-place female in the race, and fourth overall with a time of 13:37.04. Barton College won the national junior college championships for indoor and outdoor this year.
Mackiesh Taylor of the Junior Barracudas Track Club was the second-place female in 17:03.24; Joy Carrington of the V.I. National Guard was third-place female in 17:14.22.
Event participants included a couple of dozen physicists, who were visiting St. Croix for a biennial conference, and a large number of V.I. National Guard members.
Olympic Day action continues Saturday, June 30, on St. John, with an Olympic Day Run and an Olympic Day swim. Jeff Miller at 693-5283 is the person to call for information about these and other planned activities.
