May 9, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today includes these announcements:
STARfest 8 Opens This Weekend
The first performances of STARfest 8 are set for this Saturday and Sunday at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Organizers promise that if you loved STARfest 7, STARfest 8 will surpass your wildest expectations. The cast includes the finest regional talent from St.Thomas, St. John and St. Croix.
The show is titled "Legendary Rhythms" and will be directed by Malaysia Rabsatt of the Virgin Islands Institute of the Performing Arts. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and $18, respectively, and they are available at the UVI Bookstore and the Reichhold Box Office on the St. Thomas campus. Annual Giving Fund Committee to Meet
A teleconference of the UVI Annual Giving Fund Committee meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting will take place on St. Thomas in the UVI Library's second floor conference room and on St. Croix in the UVI Great House's second floor conference room. For information call 693-1042.
Scholarship Bottle Cap Drive Continues
The UVI community is reminded to continue collecting bottle caps from Coca-Cola products throughout the month of May as part of the Tom Joyner Foundation Drive to provide scholarship funds for UVI students. Look for deposit barrels on both campuses and at a variety of businesses throughout the Virgin Islands.
National Small Business Week Events Continue
Today's St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours program, held in conjunction with the Small Business Administration and the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC), planned awards to recognize the Bank of the Year, the Small Business Person of the Year and the Financial Services Advocate of the Year.
Additional National Small Business Week events on St. Thomas and St. Croix include:
Friday – "Youth Business Outreach" presentation between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at various schools on St. Thomas and St. Croix;
Monday – Seminar entitled "Writing A Winning Business Plan (Part II)" at the St. Thomas Center at 6 p.m.
May 16 – St. Croix Chamber of Commerce "Business After Hours" awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. at the Pentheny Building, 1138 King Street, Christiansted. For information contact the Small Business Development Center at 776-3206.
St. Croix Campus: 4-H Project Expo on Saturday
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Youth Development Program will sponsor the eighth annual 4-H Project Expo from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Student Activities Center.
Project displays and demonstrations will range from computer technology to cooking and public speaking. For details contact the 4-H office at 692-4087.
St. Thomas Campus: Class of 2002 Baccalaureate Service
UVI's St. Thomas graduating class of 2002 has extended an invitation to the UVI community and the general public to attend its baccalaureate service at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Memorial Moravian Church, 16 Norre Gade in Charlotte Amalie.
