APPLY QUICKLY FOR UVI SUMMER SCIENCE ACADEMIES

April 21, 2002 – The Science and Math Division at the University of the Virgin Islands is once again offering five residential Summer Science Enrichment Academies, on both campuses. The deadline to apply is April 30th.
The academies are designed to excite students in grades 7 through 12 about science, mathematics, engineering, technology, health careers, and allied health. The academy on St. Croix is for students currently in grades 7 and 8 and will take place from June 23-July 25. The academy on St. Thomas is for students currently in grades 9 through 12 and will run from June 16-July 26.
Application forms may be obtained from middle school and high school counselors and science and mathematics teachers. Interested students and parents may also call UVI and speak to July Roland-Fahie at 693-1232 or Dr. Rosenid Hernandez-Badia at 693-1383, said a release.
Participants will receive hands-on experience in the use of computers, and will explore basic concepts of biology, chemistry, physics, marine science and mathematics through selected readings, demonstrations and laboratory investigations. Career sessions conducted by practicing scientists and health professionals are also included.
Tuition and room and board in a UVI dormitory will be provided at no cost to the students. Round-trip transportation will be provided for St. Thomas and St. Croix students to participate in the academy on the other campus.
Parents and guardians of junior high or high school students who have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in any of these fields should be aware of this unique opportunity. The program also offers insights for students interested in psychiatry, clinical social work, or clinical psychology. The summer program is a chance for a challenging and exciting summer experience for students, said the release.
The Summer Science Enrichment Academies are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the UVI Health Careers Opportunities Program, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Historically Black College and University Undergraduate Program.
