April 7, 2002 – The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications for four scholarship programs designed to help Virgin Islands students pay tuition costs for the 2002-2003 school year.
CFVI offers scholarships each year as part of its mission to enhance the lives of children and families in the territory. These particular awards are established by or in memory of long-time local residents.
"Last year we distributed $15,000 in scholarships to 13 area college students," said Dee Baecher-Brown, President of the Community Foundation. "Our scholarship programs help students and families attain the goal of higher education at a time when college tuition costs continue to escalate."
The Foundation emphasizes that these are available to students throughout the territory.
Among the scholarships for 2002-2003:
Anna Walsh Scholar Awards: Approximately $8,000 will be disbursed in one-year, renewable grants to students enrolled in any accredited college or university who will have completed at least two semesters by June.
Theodore E. Sharp Scholar Award: A total of $2,000 in cash awards will be made to students with outstanding records in community service who have applied to, or are already enrolled in any accredited college or university.
Artrelle M. Wheatley Scholarship: This will provide one year's full tuition to the University of the Virgin Islands, to a student with an outstanding record in community service who will have completed at least two semesters at UVI by June.
NSL 80th Birthday Scholarship: This award, established by CFVI board member and community activist Norma S. Levine on the occasion of her 80th birthday, awards a $2,000 scholarship to a student pursuing graduate work in the humanities, social sciences, or the fine arts.
Completed applications and all accompanying documentation must be postmarked no later than May 31st, 2002, and mailed to:
