AIDS ON AGENDA FOR DELEGATE'S VISIT TO GRENADA

April 6, 2002 – Delegate Donna Christian Christensen as a member of a congressional delegation visited Grenada on Saturday to discuss issues including narcotics trafficking, money laundering and HIV/AIDS and other health issues.
The group was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Keith Mitchell and other government officials and to tour St. Georges University and Medical School, the Grand Anse School built by U.S. military personnel, and other sites.
"This trip is important to further the dialogue between the United States and its Western Hemisphere neighbors, especially in crucial areas such as HIV/AIDS," Christensen said in a release. The delegate is a physician, the only member of Congress from the English-speaking Caribbean and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust.
She said she hopes to visit Guyana later in April as a member of a delegation to be led by Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson, also to address the issue of HIV/AIDS. The Caribbean region is second only to Sub-Saharan Africa in the spread of the AIDS virus, the release said.
