POLICE FOIL ELECTRONICS STORE HEIST

Aug. 23, 2001 — St. Croix patrol officers who foiled a burglary in progress early Tuesday recovered at least $5,000 in loot from a Frederiksted electronics store, according to Deputy Police Chief Novelle Francis.
At about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police on routine patrol became suspicious of a vehicle they came upon near the Electric Depot store in the Oasis Mall, Francis said.
"Officers observed the vehicle and thought it strange for that time in the morning," he said.
As the officers approached the store, three men got into the vehicle and sped off. With the police in pursuit, the car headed at high speed toward the Mahogany Road area then stopped near Creque Dam, where the occupants fled on foot, Francis said. Officers apprehended Jamal Williams, 18. The other two individuals got away.
Francis said police recovered more than $5,000 worth of amplifiers, DVD players, cellular telephones, computer equipment and other electronic equipment from the vehicle.
Williams was charged with burglary. The investigation was continuing.
