ANGUILLA ARTS FESTIVAL CALLING FOR ENTRIES

July 30, 2001 – Virgin Islands artists are invited to submit applications to participate in the third biennial Anguilla International Arts Festival and Competition, to be held Jan. 15-21, 2002.
In addition to the judging of paintings, the week-long festival will feature artist workshops, sidewalk shows and sales, exhibitions and critiques.
Four cash prizes will be awarded — $10,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place, and $1,250 each for third place and "people's choice." Five paintings will be selected for reproduction as Anguilla postage stamps, according to a release from the Tourism Department.
According to the regulations, one submitted entry may be reproduced as a poster to promote the next biennial festival and competition, and participation in the event authorizes the festival to reproduce "posters and/or postage stamps of any submission."
Artwork for the competition may be in any painterly medium but must be in keeping with this year's festival theme of "Tropical Images." The first step in the process is for an artist to submit up to three slides of his or her work. A panel of judges will review the slides to determine which artists are to be invited to take part in the festival.
All submitted work will be offered for sale in Anguilla during the month following the competition, with 65 percent of the sale price to go to the artist and 35 percent to the festival.
Virgin Islands artists who participated in the earlier festivals are Janet Cook-Rutnik and Lisa Etre of St. John, Maria Henle of St. Croix and Betty Barber and Erik Pedersen of St. Thomas. Cook-Rutnik noted that in previous years exhibitor artists were required to spend time on Anguilla studying and working during the summer preceding the festival. This year, that is not a requirement.
Registration forms, slides and the $75 entry fee must be submitted by Oct. 15. Artists will be notified by Nov. 1 of the slide jury's decisions.
Application forms may be downloaded from the festival web site, www.artsfestival.ai or may be obtained by calling the Tourism office on St. Thomas, at 774-8784. For further information, see the web site, call (264) 497-2949, or send an e-mail querty to cperry@anguillanet.com.
