FOOD AND BEVERAGE CALLS 'BARNACLE' BILL BACK

July 18, 2001 – Despite a few years away from it all, former St. Thomas restaurateur Bill Grogan still hadn't gotten the food and beverage business out of his blood.
And now the longtime owner/operator of the Barnacle Bill's restaurant and night spot in Sub Base has a new way to put his experience and expertise to good use — as general manager of the new Dolphin Gourmet Market and Wine Shop on St. John.
In the 1980s and '90s, Grogan and his wife, Judy, made Barnacle Bill's not only a popular restaurant and bar but also a top spot on St. Thomas for live music by visiting as well as local artists. However, his landlord, the V.I. government, opted not to renew his lease — and razed the building shortly after the restaurant closed. Grogan moved on to timeshare sales and for the last two seasons also have served as technical director and master of ceremonies for the Tillett Gardens concert series.
"It's exciting to be back in the food and beverage area, and St. John certainly is a beehive of activity," Grogan said Wednesday. "It's nice to make the commute, and I'm happy to be doing it — but I'm still looking for the place where I can put the stage."
The Dolphin Gourmet Market and Wine Shop occupies nearly 5,000 newly renovated square feet of space in the Boulon Center in the heart of Cruz Bay. For a preview of its offerings and what Grogan has to say about them, see "Dolphin Market to host a public party Aug. 6".
