WITNESSES: MAN SLAIN BY KMART GUARD HAD KNIFE

Police are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting Thursday of a 36-year-old man inside the Sunny Isle Kmart by a store security guard.
According to police officials, the security guard, who was not identified, shot and killed Samuel Durand a half hour after the store opened Thursday. Durand is said to have been a vagrant and was shot in the chest when the two men began fighting near the store’s luggage area.
Witnesses said the security guard fired at Durand in self defense when the attacker brandished a 5-inch knife during the scuffle. The security guard was treated for minor injuries at nearby Juan F. Luis Hospital and released. Durand was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence at the Sunny Isle store followed an incident at the end of March in which a 12-year-old girl and a 55-year-old man were wounded when individuals in two vehicles opened fire in a rolling shootout in the parking lot.
