CRUCIAL TEST WORKSHOPS BEING HELD

Students at the University of the Virgin Islands are taking part in two 10-day workshops that will prepare them for the Graduate Record Examination and the Medical College Admission Test.
The workshops, which students typically pay between $1,000 and $1,500 to attend, are each
being offered at UVI for the nominal price of $50, thanks to a combination of science and mathematics grants the University has
received.
The workshops, which are being facilitated by the Princeton Review, are being funded by a Health Careers Opportunity Grant, with contributions from a National Science Foundation grant and a Minority Access to
Research Careers grant UVI has received.
It is the first time UVI has offered such intensive GRE/MCAT preparation workshops. They will be offered again in January 2001.
"One of the things about these tests is getting exposure to them," said Dr. Robert Stolz, an associate professor of mathematics at UVI. "This gives them practice."
About 25 UVI students are participating this year – a mixture of seniors, juniors and sophomores. Stolz said UVI's Science and
Mathematics Division faculty has made it a point to stress the importance of student participation. Previously, only a few students took advantage of a shorter, free GRE and MCAT workshop the University
offered, he said.
"I have been coaxing a lot of theses students to sign up and reminding them," Stolz said. "The whole science and math division has been getting students to come in. This is a hurdle they have to cross to get into graduate school."
