EFFORT UNDER WAY TO ARRANGE BULK WASTE PICKUP

The top Public Works Department official on St. John, Deputy Commissioner Ira Wade, said Thursday that, with the Susannaberg transfer station shut down, he's trying to arrange an islandwide collection of bulk waste, and he hopes residents will cooperate by holding onto old furniture and appliances until then.
Since people can't dump their refuse at the transfer station, Wade said, many have "decided to dump wherever they can. And the best place to dump is around the garbage bins, and it really doesn't look good."
The holidays have only made things worse, he added: "It's Christmas time, so we're getting two and a half to three times the amount of garbage we would normally have, primarily because we have tourists on island."
Wade said he's trying to get approval for Public Works to arrange a one-time pickup of bulk household items at various locations on St. John that would be announced to the public.
Meantime, he asked that when people are ready to dispose of their cut Christmas trees, they take them to the Public Works office at Susannaberg. He said he plans to process the trees through a wood chipper set up at the site.
