THREE PAID HOLIDAYS GONE, TRANSFER DAY REMAINS

Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has line-item vetoed the section of the Omnibus Act that would have changed Transfer Day from a paid to an unpaid holiday.
However, Turnbull did go along with the Legislature's decision to change three other holidays to Sunday observances — Organic Act Day, Hurricane Supplication Day and Hurricane Thanksgiving Day — contrary to an earlier report in The Source.
Turnbull originally had proposed eliminating five paid holidays — Holy Thursday, Easter Monday, Organic Act Day, Hurricane Supplication Day and Hurricane Thanksgiving Day.
Post Auditor Campbell Malone estimated that those five holidays would have saved V.I. taxpayers $2 million a year.
Transfer Day was not one of the holidays Turnbull suggested be changed to a Sunday observance. In vetoing that section of the Omnibus Act, the governor said Transfer Day was too important a holiday to eliminate as a paid day off.
