The SS Norway, a weekly visitor to St. Thomas for many years, is making an unscheduled visit to St. Croix Tuesday and will do the same for the next two Tuesdays, Dec. 7 and 14.
The normal itinerary of the distinctive blue ship, which sails out of Miami, is to make just three stops — at a private island, at Sint Maarten and then at St. Thomas. However, according to a release from the V.I Port Authority, because of damage to Sint Maarten as a result of Hurricane Lenny, cruise ship officials decided to divert the vessel to St. Croix for three weeks.
The Norway has a capacity of about 2,000 passengers. Because of its deep keel, the ship does not tie up at either cruise ship dock in St. Thomas harbor but instead anchors in the outer harbor and ferries passengers to and from the waterfront dock in two large-capacity tenders, carried aboard the ship.
