BILL PROVIDES FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY FINES

Gov. Charles Turnbull has sent the Legislature a proposal to amend the Virgin Islands Code to establish a local jurisdiction for fines and penalties to be issued by highway safety inspectors for safety violations in the territory.
An inspection program known as the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program has been in effect in the territory since 1995 under the Police Department Office of Highway Safety, Turnbull said.
"Our highway safety inspectors have been trained and certified to conduct safety and hazardous material inspection on commercial motor vehicles," the governor said. "The institution of a penalty system will bring the territory into compliance with the mandates of federal law."
