The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday approved federal grant applications totaling about $1.5 million. The grants seek financial
help in the areas of domestic violence, victim assistance, juvenile justice and delinquency and historic preservation.
The grant applications that were approved, according to the V.I. Independent, were:
— $579,000 for crime victims assistance.
— $542,000 to provide support services for women victims of violence.
— $ 15,000 to offer support to juvenile "status offenders."
— $ 97,000 for juvenile delinquency program evaluation, development or enhancement.
— $288,853 for historic and cultural preservation.
The victim assistance money would help support agencies that provide direct
services to victims, such as the Family Resource Center, the Safety Zone of
St. John, Legal Services and Kidscope.
The monies to provide support and services to women victims of violence would be slated for the Family Resource Center, the Women's Coalition of St. Croix and the Police Department to assist with expanding services for women who are victims of violence, according to the Daily News.
Two juvenile delinquency grants would provide $15,000 for assistance in removing juveniles who are guilty of curfew violations and truancy from the court system and $97,000 to evaluate and develop delinquency prevention programs.
The historic and cultural preservation money would assist Planning and Natural Resources in developing cultural heritage tourism and fund other nonprofit organizations and programs that aid historical and cultural
preservation.
