SONIA JACOBS DOW NAMED LABOR COMMISSIONER

Gov. Charles W. Turnbull completed his Cabinet nominations Monday with the choice of Sonia Jacobs Dow of St. Croix to be Labor commissioner.
In addition to sending her name to the Legislature for confirmation, Turnbull named Dow acting commissioner. His release did not say when that appointment takes effect.
Dow has both a business and labor background, and provided training and other consulting services in workforce development, community mobilization, conference management, stategic planning and race and ethnic relations, the Government House release said.
She has been been the owner and principal consultant of Sonia Jacobs and Associates in St. Croix and the art gallery Kallaloo since 1993. From 1991 to 1993 she was executive director of the V.I. Private Industry Council and developed and implemented marketing plans for the V.I. Job Training Partnership Act system. She was intercultural affairs coordinator at Baylor University in Texas, her alma mater, from 1989 to 1991.
Dow is also managing director for the Caribbean Center for Leadership and Community Development and a board member of the St. Croix Landmarks Society. She is a graduate of St. Joseph's High School.
