Monday is Presidents' Day in the Virgin Islands, a holiday for local and federal government workers — but not for the public Teachers and students will head for school schools.
to make up a day lost because of Hurricane Georges in September.
Acting Education Commissioner Ruby Simmonds, in announcing that classes would be held Monday, said the Education Department and unions agreed in October to use the Presidents' Day holiday as a makeup day.
School bus service and lunches will be available, Simmonds said.
By law school is supposed to be in session 180 days each year.
The Daily News has tracked days missed this year on all three islands and gave this rundown for St. Thomas public schools:
— Aug. 25, all schools closed because of a teachers' job action.
— Sept. 21-25, all schools closed because of Hurricane Georges.
Local and federal government agencies, post offices, banks and many business offices will be closed Monday. Supermarkets will be open. Some shops will remain open all day; others will have abbreviated hours.
No official observance of Presidents' Day has been announced.
