Three events are slated for the opening of the school year – V.I. Fathers Back to School Barbecue and Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27; the Back to School Days of Prayer on Saturday , Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4; and the V.I. Fathers March on Sept. 6, the first day of school for public schools in the territory. Organizers are encouraging fathers to take their children back to school starting on the first day.

The Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) received $92,335 this spring from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to fund three projects across the territory.

UVI Researchers Investigate Potential Risks of Lionfish Consumption

Researchers from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) have published results of their investigation into the consumption of lionfish in the “Marine Drugs Journal.” Since 2008, lionfish native to tropical and sub-tropical reef ecosystems in the southern Indian Ocean, South Pacific and Red Sea have been reported in waters in the territory.

Education Releases Final 2014-2015 School Calendar

Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. signed the 2014-2015 school calendar on Tuesday, July 22, and it was officially released by the Department of Education. According to the calendar, opening and closing dates for school are Sept. 2, 2014 and June 19, 2015.
