NEW POLICY ON ISSUING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

The local Social Security Administration office has announced a policy modification for assigning new SS numbers to applicants age one or older. Numbers will not be issued until the custodian of record verifies birth information, to avoid identity theft.

LAWS ENCOURAGE REVITALIZATION, REHABILITATION

The territory has enacted two incentive programs, one to encourage investment in areas deemed to be "in need of economic and physical revitalization" on St. Croix and St. Thomas, the other to encourage rehabilitation of historic structures on St. Croix. Attorney Marjorie Roberts, a tax law specialist, says the programs are expected to be fully implemented in the next few months.
