tired of high prices on the island?
Jan 20, 2011 - 11:01

really! it is 2011 and we are still getting charged excessive prices on the island! kmart actually pays someone to go around with a black magic marker to block out state side pricing. sometimes they miss and we actually get to pay the real price.

technology advances make internet shopping and shipping a reality. fight high prices and shop online.

I was stunned today as I read in The Economist that the city of Atlanta, with a population of 550,000 has a budget of $547m. Yet the USVI, with a population of 109,750 has a budget of $831.3m. WHAT is going on on our islands???????!!!!!!!
The unfunded pension liabilities of Atlanta are $1.5billion, and the unfunded pension liabilities of the VI are $1billion (based on data from 2005, which at that time were expected to rise 8% per year). WHAT is going on on our islands?????!!!!!
More than an across the board 8% pay cut has to happen. The entire budget needs a good old zero sum re-evaluation.
Atlanta, to it's credit, increased the time that needs to be worked to qualify for a pension. For current city workers they also had to increase their contributions by 5% of their salaries. The overly generous pensions in the VI need at least these sorts of measures if we are to seriously address fiscal responsibility in the VI.
