Response to Delegate Donna Christensen's Op-ed
May 10, 2010 - 03:05

To Delegate Donna Christensen:

Madam,

I found some of your comments in the Op-ed, "Biting Off Our Nose to Spite Our Face?", distressing and insulting. You stated that the "tea partyism" folks are "so aroused into blind anger by some of the rhetoric against President Obama's agenda that they are not listening to/not hearing the facts of the issues…"

Actually the 'tea partyers' are not all ignorant rabble inflamed by mere rhetoric and unaware of the facts of the issues. Believe it or not, there are many informed people, tea partyers and otherwise, who do not agree with President Obama's policies!

Empty rhetoric, either negative against President Obama or negative slurs against citizens who hold different views than your own, is not conducive to an honest discussion of the issues.

You must not know any "tea party folks" personally. If you did you wouldn't have made the unfounded and racist charge that there is "an element of racism at its core" as you stated in the Op-ed.

There is room in our country, including the Virgin Islands, for more than one opinion on the issues. I hope there is room for them in your heart too.

to georgemerc, i'd like to add a comment.

i have always appreciated the fact that she is willing to put her reasons for why she does what she does out there, which is more than i can say for many elected officials who tell us what we want to hear while hiding their own motivations and motives.

i also believe that whatever she does, she feels that she does it for the good of the people of the territory. if you've been watching her for even 5 minutes, you know she is not about political expediency. she has held to more than one controversial direction in her career as delegate to congress.

as for the tea party...

i am glad that you are not a racist nor feel superiority over people of color, but that does not mean people like that do not exist, and some of them have glommed onto the tea party.

i, too believe that the movement's message is being eclipsed by the actions of persons within its ranks who are in despair at seeing a person of color in the white house. their ire has been bubbling under for some time and they are in a full-blown temper, which has yet to subside, although it has abated a bit.

i am glad the time came when they could finally get this off their chests, but they are still in denial because they don't want to be seen as racist. it's fair to assume that we have many in our nation who'd always assumed natural superiority to any person of color, and it tips their universe a bit to be toe to toe with president barack hussein obama. i think that when they realize how they feel, they are shocked at themselves because they had never thought of themselves in this way.

i don't know if they will ever get over it.

So you agree then. The fact that any political movement has a fringe is no surprise. The fact that you and others think that racism drives our agenda is laughable. This is typical Christensen, typical Democrat, or in some cases, even that other party.

First, let me say that I have voted for Delegate Donna Christian-Green since we voted out Victor Frazier (who destroyed the Delegates office & all the work he performed for the people of the Virgin Islands many years ago.
Victor in effect, destroyed property of the Virgin Islands. I have always applauded Donna & her efforts, but I must say I too feel her comments insulting as well!
I'll also point out I'm NOT a Tea partier, but agree with the right, the RESPONSIBILITY of all US citizens to ensure the government is acting on the best interests of the majority of her(and yours, Donna) constituents!

I also agree with georgemerc & his/her response!

As a reminder, The Declaration of Independence establishes the supremacy of the People over the Government and establishes the Right and the Duty of the People "to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security."

The Declaration of Independence establishes the supremacy of the People and the Right and Duty to defend the Rights of the People over the Acts of the Government.

The Government Exists for the Sole Purpose of Serving the People, not the other way around, Ruling the People!

Many feel the government overstepped it's bounds & Donna, Obama & the rest of the Dems & GOP need to realize we do know what is best for us!

It is not our right, but our DUTY, by law, to ensure the government is subservient to the People and only exists for the purpose of serving the People!

Also, Donna, can you please provide a email address so we, your constituents can more readily contact you or your office (so you can better serve us)?
