The V.I. Police Department has a theme song, "Don't Run, Don't Hide," written by local musicians Fusion Band for use in the government television channel documentary, "V.I. Cops."
<p>It's a pity how CCT's Director of the above play is treating the playwright, although they're entertaining a full house for every show. Changes were made in the script without the director consulting or notifying the playwright. A meeting was held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at CCT's establishment, between playwright, director, CCT's president and another CCT board member. The playwright voiced her views on the changes made of which she did not approve, and requested that the Director return the script to the original form, wording, dialogue, in which the playwright presented it to her. The three CCT personnel agreed to make the changes the playwright requested. Attending the play on Friday, July 16th, 2010, the playwright noticed that only a small part of the changes was made, and that is to the very end of the play. In the script, the playwright had a line of dialog in which Bert Bryan's name was mentioned. The Director, without notifying the playwright eliminated that line. The playwright demanded that that line be reinstated in the script at the meeting. All three CCT board members promised that that request would be granted and the line be read by one of the actors during the show. On Friday, the playwright noticed that the line was still eliminated. The only reason why that line was left out is because Bert Bryan's name is mentioned. What would you call that? The playwright put that piece of information in the script because she wanted to prove a point. As others have pointed out, it smells racism. We all know that a certain population on this small island do not like Bert Bryan's or his truthful opinions. This is just a play. The cast is just acting. Why should the director deliberately omit that short line without consulting the playwright? Why did they dupe the playwright, promising to follow the script that the playwright presented to CCT and the Director? The playwright was talking about honesty, about not being afraid to speak one's mind. This is the short line. "That's why I like Bert Bryan. He tells it like it is and he doh give a damn what anyone say. He doh care who get vex wid him." What's so wrong in saying that piece of dialogue? And this is how the playwright ended the play: After the office cast leave the stage, the custodial worker, Muriel, enters. MURIEL (Laughs) Lawd, I can't wait to go on my one month cruise on Tuesday. Thank you Big man, for that ten thousand dollars you paid me for spying on those losers. If you hire competent and professional people to see that the work is being done, you wouldn't have to waste so much money. (Dances a jig, EXITS). AFTER MURIEL LEAVES, A MAN ENTERS. HE LOKS AROUND THE ROOM AND SMILES. MAN (Loudly) The coast is clear, Big Man. BIG MAN ENTERS, CIRCLES THE ROOM, NODS HIS HEAD. BIG MAN Your aunt can have that supervisory position, Frankie. That big, fat slob was just polluting the office. (Laughs Loudly) And now I can hire my friends to fill the other positions. (Pats Frankie's back) Not bad, huh. I'm not using that old hag as our spy again. I have someone else in mind. (Laughs) CURTAIN The Director added the sleazy part where the Big Man jacks up the woman against the desk and she takes his wallet out of his pocket. That female actor was not to return on stage at any time. The Director sent the playwright a scenario in re to the changes of that scene after the meeting that was held on Tuesday. The playwright still did not agree with the way she wanted the play to end and sent the director her version which the director ignored, again, without a response to the playwright. Is that any way to treat the playwright? She had a vision of how her play should unfold on stage and she was disrespected, disregarded and left with no say in voicing her opinion in the changes the Director made in the script. The playwright worked hard, wracking her brains to come up with idea to create a sensible script, she spent hours in front of the computer editing and re-editing. For the full house CCT is entertaining at all of the performances, the playwright should have been given more respect, should have been able to say what she wanted in her script. She should have been notified of the changes the director made in the script. The playwright was treated as if she had no part in creating the script for this box-office hit.</p>
