An armed robber hit an Estate Diamond Ruby business Monday shortly after noon, threatening the people in the business and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, the V.I. Police Department reported in a news release.
According to the police, the husband and wife owners and one employee of Caribbean Lock and Safe were in the business at midday when the incident occurred.
The employee told the responding officers that at about 12:30 p.m. he was leaving the business when an unknown man entered the screen door, brandishing a gun. The gunman ordered him to lie on the floor. When he did so, the man took his wallet, emptied it of cash and gave it back to him as he turned towards the rear of the business office.
The female co-owner of the business told police she had hidden in the restroom with the door slightly ajar, but the suspect discovered her, pointed his gun at her and also had her lie on the ground. She said she was able to see the suspect pick up a bank bag that contained cash before going to the cash register at the front of the business, emptying it of its contents and then leaving the business.
The male co-owner of Caribbean Lock and Safe said he been in the far rear of the business during the robbery and saw when the suspect left. He then ran outside and phoned 911.
No one was injured in the robbery and an undetermined amount of cash was taken. The victims described the suspect as having worn all black clothing, a black bandana covering his face and holding a chrome-colored gun.
The incident is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
