Fleeing Car Thief Fires at Police During Chase

One of two suspects who stole a vehicle Sunday shot at police officers while attempting to elude capture, the V.I. Police Department said.

Police were alerted to a robbery in Gallows Bay at 10:38 p.m. Sunday and interviewed the victim, who said he is a security guard in the area.

The victim said he was sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot when a masked man approached and told him to cooperate and he would not get hurt. The victim got out of his car and handed his keys to the suspect. That suspect and another suspect got into the vehicle, but the vehicle would not start. The victim said he assisted the suspects in starting the car and the suspects drove off.

Police spotted the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Queen Mary Highway near Estate Anna’s Hope. Police pursued the vehicle through Estate Anna’s Hope, Catherine’s Rest, Rosegate, and Work and Rest. The suspects discarded the vehicle in Work and Rest and fled on foot.

According to police, one suspect fired a shot at officers and officers returned fire. No one was injured. The suspects fled and remain at large.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau continues to follow up on this case.
