Gillette Caribbean Classic Triathlon Held at Cramer’s Park

Jay Gleason wins Gillette Caribbean Classic Olympic TriathlonAlthough the feature event was the Olympic-distance race, many triathletes opted for shorter distances and took on the Sprint and Try-a-Tri races instead.
Jay Gleason reached the finish line first in the Olympic race in 2:32:05. He also posted the fastest 1500-meter swim time and 24+ mile bike time. Troy Holloway took advantage of Jay’s "trouble" on the run and made up some time with his faster pace in the 5.8-mile run. Holloway finished second in 2:34:20. Just one minute behind him was first female finisher Bridget Klein. She and second place female finisher Esther Ellis duked it out on the swim and exited the water just five seconds apart. Ellis made a dash on the bike, knowing that she needed to bank a few minutes before reaching the run portion. Unable to hold off the powerhouse runner, Ellis finished almost two minutes after the leader. Scott Fricks was the third place male
A big bravo goes to Lukata Samuel, who suffered a flat near Divi Hotel and ran the rest of the bike portion. He then continued on to run the 5.8 miles as well. Finishing a few minutes behind Lukata was Joe "always going the extra mile" Kantowski, who ran nearly to Point Udall on the first loop of the run course.
Bridget Klein, followed closely by Esther Ellis, was battling until the final 2 miles of the race. Bridget was first the female finisher; Esther was second. The Sprint racers took to the water with the Olympic racers but only covered 750 meters of the course. Fresh off her win in the 5-Mile Coral Reef Swim just last Sunday, Jen Andrews was the first out of the water, in a time of 10:05. Relay swimmer and birthday girl Erin Andrews followed her mom and posted a time of 11:21. The relay team of Drew Wall and Rachel Conhoff was the first to finish the Sprint race, with a time of 1:23:29. Visitor Benjamin Lewis posted the fastest run time to solidify his win in the Sprint Individual race. Jen was the first female and second overall, while Eddie Nolan was the third overall finisher. The 5th grade team of Erin Andrews, Mikey Dizon-Bumann and Colin Gray was second in the relay division and the team of Cindy Whitehurst, Louise Stapleton and Larry Williams was third.
The Try-a-Tri race gave several "newbies" a taste of this multi-sport event at a shorter distance. Thirteen-year-old Dominic Pugliese dominated the field by posting the fastest times in all three disciplines. He finished the 250-meter swim, 6.5-mile bike and 1.5-mile run in 48:23, which is nearly 10 minutes faster than his time last year. Colby Moran, a student at AZ Academy, was second in 50:00, and his dad, Kevin, was third. Claudia Lombard was the first female and third overall. Brice Richards, a student at Good Hope Country Day School (GHCDS), was the youngest competitor.
Thanks go to Gillette for its race series sponsorship and to the water station helpers (the Smiths, Carol Fricks and Mo Hart) and the time-keepers (Denise Blanchette and Rachel Conhoff) for keeping the race going smoothly and safely.
The next multi-sport event is the Triple Mini & B.O.T.E 5K on Sunday, Dec 7, at Cramer’s Park. This is a super fun one which allows runners to pick their distances, i.e., do the mini sprint once, twice or three times. Start off with the Beast of the East 5K first and be fit for four!
