Horses from Across the Virgin Islands will Race Sunday

Horses race down the backstretch at the Randall 'Doc' James Racetrack.Sunday’s card for the Labor Day weekend races will feature inter-Virgin Islands racing, both British and U.S., on St. Croix for the first time in years, and several ferry boats will bring fans from across the islands.

The 10th race – the “Bway Ah Bway Classic,” a one-mile dash for a purse of $11,400 – will feature the very best horses in thoroughbred racing from the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The BVI will be represented by four highly touted high claimers, all making their Caribbean debut on Sunday, and BVI race fans expect one of these to be in the winner’s circle at the end of the race. The horses are Trevelyn (119), Lake Texoma (117), East End Tap (119), and Bird Charm (119.)

St. Thomas will be represented by the current U.S. Virgin Islands champ, Gallant Ruler (119,) who always seems to perform at his best on the big track. St. Croix will have its top campaigners in the gate in the promising Temo’s Dream (119) looking for his first victory, the hard charging Formal King (119,) and the late-running Lost River (119.)

The other race that many racing fans have been looking forward to is the seven and a half-furlong ninth race for mares and fillies. In this one, the territory’s two top mares – Bonnie Bonita (120) of St. Thomas and Flankers Lady from St. Croix – will finally lock horns on a race track. Bonnie Bonita upset the boys in the Governor’s Cup on the St. Thomas’ Carnival race card in April and is the race favorite going into Sunday, but Flankers Lady is also a very talented mare with blazing speed who also recently evened the seven furlongs track record at the St. Croix track. There are some other good mares in the field who, if the top two should falter, are capable of winning this race, including Bold Cleo of St. Thomas, Cinque Terre (117,) Leggy Blond (116) and Wonderifiamspecial (116.)
