UVI Board Approves School of Medicine Submission

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees on Monday approved materials to be submitted for accreditation of the proposed UVI School of Medicine.

The action was taken at a special meeting of the UVI board.

Monday’s resolution approved materials and agreements to be submitted to the Liaison Committee for Medical Education for the accreditation process. The LCME is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the authority for the accreditation of medical education programs leading to doctor of medicine degrees.

According to a news release from UVI, the Board of Trustees approved for submission to the LCME the following School of Medicine documents:

– UVI School of Medicine introduction and overview,

– Bylaws,

– Diversity policy, and

– Operating policies and procedures.

Affiliation agreements with the following institutions were also approved for submission to the LCME:

– University of Central Florida: curriculum, assessment tools, faculty development, licensure and payment schedule;

– University of South Florida: clinical training rotations – fourth-year Tampa General Hospital;

– University of South Florida: professional advisory and training services – management and development simulation center;

– University of South Florida: academic affiliation agreement;

– Schneider Regional Medical Center: clinical training; and

– Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center: clinical training.

Deadline for the submission of the documents and agreements is Dec. 1. Meeting this deadline is necessary for UVI to open the UVI School of Medicine in the fall of 2016, the university’s release said.

The meeting was held via video conference on UVI’s St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, with several Board members joining via teleconference.
