In 2009, then 15-year-old Deshorn Lake announced his plans to move stadeside to further his career after achieving two major goals: becoming the first-ever Virgin Islander to make the U.S. Olympic team for baseball and coming back from the International Baseball Federations AA Youth World Championships with a gold medal.
Transfering from Charlotte Amalie High School on St. Thomas to Menchville High School, Lake added to his resume in Virginia: he was selected by the Boston Red Socks in the 12th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Amateur Player Draft, but chose not to sign, and was named to a pair of All-America teams as a senior.
According to his player bio, Lake played two years with the Menchville Monarchs, posting a 15-4 record with a 2.06 ERA, 131 strikeouts and 61 walks over 98.1 innings.
These days, the now 20-year-old relief pitcher looks to be heading to the majors to accomplish another personal feat: signing with the New York Yankees.
The news was announced a couple days ago on several Internet blogs, which say that the last step in the process is passing a physical exam – set for Monday – since Lake has already verbally committed to signing with the Yankees.
Lake currently plays with the Fayetteville SwampDogs in North Carolina’s Coastal Plain Baseball League and, so far this summer, has been 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA and two saves in six appearances.
