Lance Armstrong Coming to St. Croix for Triathlon

Famed U.S. cycling champion Lance Armstrong has entered the May 6 Ironman St. Croix 70.3 Triathlon and is coming to the big island, according to race organizers. Armstrong, who won the prestigious Tour de France bicycle race an unprecedented seven consecutive times, has turned his sights back to triathlon, a sport he practiced in his teens.

The St. Croix Ironman 70.3 has historically featured the greatest athletes in the sport of triathlon, but is now stepping up a notch by featuring one of the world’s greatest athletes in any sport, race organizers say. Armstrong will be searching for his first win in triathlon on St. Croix to qualify to compete in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

The St. Croix Ironman, now in its 24th year, is a chance for international competitors to qualify early in the season for the world championships. There are qualifying slots on the line for the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, and slots to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Fla.

The race starts in downtown Christiansted and will offer spectators an unparalleled to see a legend race up close.
