WOMAN DIES AFTER BEING SHOT DURING ROBBERY

Sept. 24, 2002 – A late morning robbery on Monday at a convenience store in Estate Calquohoun has claimed the life of a St. Croix woman, later identified as 33-year-old Rose Ovalle.
Police officials confirmed Ovalle's death at 7 p.m. Monday. The victim underwent emergency surgery on Monday afternoon after having been shot in the side during a robbery at the Ovalle Convenience Store.
Police said that minutes before 11 a.m. a lone gunman stormed the store, taking $80 and shooting Ovalle, who had screamed out as the robbery was in progress.
The suspect is said to have fled the area in a light green Honda sedan.
When Ovalle's husband came into the store from a back room after hearing her scream and then the gunshot, he found his wife on the floor clinging to her side.
The death is the 15th killing recorded on St. Croix this year and the 33rd in the territory. At this time last year, the homicide toll stood at 10 on St. Croix and 17 overall.
