Distribution of Bonus USDA Commodities Slated for St. Croix

In conjunction with The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), bonus USDA commodities will be distributed on St. Croix from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the Charles H. Emanuel Elementary School, according to a press release issued Monday by the V.I. Department of Education – State Special Nutrition Programs.

Senior Citizens 60 years and older, must meet the income eligibility requirements. Other persons or heads of household eligible to receive these commodities must be identified as needy by meeting one of the following criteria:
1. An individual or head of household that is a client of any of the following income certified assistance programs:
(a) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(b) Medical Assistance Program
(c) A tenant of subsidized public housing.
2. Persons who are not participants or clients of the above programs must have a family income that does not exceed the 185 percent of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines for July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

Proper identification such as a SNAP card, Medical Assistance Card or proof of income for persons completing the self certification form must be presented. Commodities will not be given to persons not having proper documentation. Eligible recipients must bring along sturdy boxes or bags to place commodities. Only one distribution package will be given per household.
TEFAP is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income needy persons, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance.
