V.I. Answer Desk: Primary Winner for At-Large Senator?

Reader J. Higgins asks: "I may have missed the result on senator at-large seat; especially Greg Miller? Do you have results on that?"

There was no primary for the senator at-large seat. Democrat Ronnie Jones will compete in the General Election against Republican Jodi Hodge and independent Almando Liburd.

Three Democratic Party candidates initially declared their intention to compete for the at-large seat candidacy: Jones, Greg Miller and James Dalmida Jr.

According to Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes, Miller and Dalmida were both disqualified from running for that seat because they did not meet the St. John residency requirements in V.I. law.

The V.I. Code says in title 2, sections 102 and 103 that candidates for the at-large seat must have been "a bona fide resident of St. John for at least three consecutive years next preceding the general election." Registering to vote and maintaining primary residence are components of the definition of "bona fide resident."

Miller works on St. John but has primarily lived on St. Thomas. "Miller is a St. Thomas resident and ultimately decided to run there," Fawkes said. Miller received 325 votes in the primary for a St. Thomas seat and did not make it onto the November ballot.

James Dalmida Jr. also initially filed for the at-large seat but withdrew after not filing all the paperwork by the deadline. Dalmida also did not meet residency requirements, Fawkes said.

While Dalmida did move back to St. John, he did so recently and only registered to vote in the territory in April of this year, Fawkes said.
