UVI Commencement Set for May 15 and 16 UVI will conduct its 46th Annual Commencement Ceremonies May 15 and 16, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. On St. Thomas the ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix the ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, on the campus grounds.

The class speaker on the St. Thomas campus will be Jaedee S.K. Caines. The class speaker on the St. Croix campus will be Carmie K. Thompson. The class speakers are selected by members of their class. A news release is available on the UVI Web site’s home page – uvi.edu.
UVI Seeks Applicants for Psychology Master’s Degree Program UVI is seeking applicants for a new graduate program in psychology, which was approved in March by the UVI Board of Trustees. While the university’s application deadline for graduate programs is officially April 30, the deadline for the Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration program has been extended until all of the allotted slots in the program are filled. The program seeks to enroll 15 students on each campus for the fall 2010 semester.
The master’s program enables individuals to work as psychological counselors in the public and private sectors. A news release is available on the UVI Web site’s home page – uvi.edu.
Career Services Surveying UVI’s 2010 Graduating Class All members of UVI’s 2010 graduating class are asked to complete a Career Services Exit Survey prepared by the University’s Career Services Office. Students must complete this confidential survey and submit it when collecting their tickets for graduation. The survey is available from the Career Services section of the UVI Web site – uvi.edu.
Proposal Writing and Post-Award Grant Management Seminar Set May 12 UVI’s Office of Sponsored Programs and the Controller’s Office will offer a proposal writing and post-award grant management seminar from 2:45-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12. This session will cover proposal writing and project implementation at UVI. Special emphasis will be given to the internal review process and changes in university procedures that impact on externally-sponsored projects. The seminar will be available, via videoconference, in Business Administration Room 101 on the St. Thomas campus and in Room 103 of the North West Wing on the St. Croix campus. UVI Libraries to Observe Intersession Hours May 10-14 UVI’s Information Technology Services has announced that the University’s libraries will observe intersession hours from Monday, May 10, through Friday, May 14. During this period, UVI Libraries will operate from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The libraries will be closed on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17. SBDC Seminar to Focus on Innovation in Business on May 12 on St. Thomas A seminar focusing on the importance of innovation in small businesses will be offered by UVI’s V.I. Small Business Development Center from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, at the SBDC Training Facility in Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Stavros Michailidis, who holds a master’s degree in creative studies and a graduate certificate for Creativity and Change Leadership from the State University of New York’s College at Buffalo, will be the seminar presenter. He founded the company Starvos-CM, which offers innovation training, facilitation and outsourcing. The aspects of innovation in business to be covered include: the traits of an innovative product, the behaviors of innovators, the cultures of innovative organizations and how to foster them, and the systematic steps of the innovation process. Admission is $25. Individuals who pre-register will receive a 20 percent discount. UVI students, staff, faculty and U.S. veterans who pre-register will be admitted free. Free Life Skills Workshop Slated for May 13 on St. Thomas New Image Foundation and Clearwater Consulting Concepts in collaboration with the UVI’s Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host a free life skills workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 13, at the center’s training room at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The workshop will feature Timothy Kight, chief executive officer of Focus3. Kight, one of the most effective and powerful speakers in today’s business world, will introduce his life skills training program “The R Factor – How to Maximize the One Thing You Control.” For registration information, contact Cynthia Jerry at 777-8883, or view the R Factor Web site: cccvi.com/the-r-factor.
SBA/SBDC Invites Businesses to Meet Federal Government Contracting Officers The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in collaboration with the V.I. Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will offer a chance to meet with federal government contracting officers on St. Croix and St. Thomas this week. The sessions will feature presentations by contracting officers from the V.I. National Guard, the General Service Administration (GSA) and the National Park Service.
Networking and matchmaking sessions will follow, allowing individuals to meet directly with federal procurement officers as well as a procurement contract representative from SBA national office. A business development specialist from the Puerto Rico District Office will also be on hand. Federal procurement officers routinely contract for products and services from qualified local firms. Topics to be covered include the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, the certification process, the SBA HUBzone Program and the Central Contractor Registration service.
The St. Croix session is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, at the SBDC Training Center at Sunshine Mall. The St. Thomas session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. Registration is free. Seating is limited on St Croix. St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony to Highlight VI Small Business Week
UVI’s V.I. Small Business Development Center will host its annual St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 4, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The ceremony will highlight the observance of Virgin Islands Small Business Week. Jerry Garcia, public relations and marketing director for the V.I. Economic Development Authority will be the event’s keynote speaker. Garcia will discuss the “Importance of Competitive Marketing for Small Businesses.” The event is offered in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Association. Space at the awards ceremony is limited. Interested persons must pre-register by contacting the SBDC St. Thomas office at 776-3206 or sending e-mail to visbdcstt@uvi.edu.
