UVI Libraries, Computer Labs Holiday Schedule Details While UVI’s Libraries will be closed on Veterans Day, students will have access to computer labs on St. Thomas – the 24/7 Library Lab – and on St. Croix – the NWW 120 Lab. Students may also access online library resources at anytime by going to http://library.uvi.edu. Also, UVI’s Information Technology Services Help Desk voice mail at ext.1466 and e-mail – helpdesk@uvi.edu – will be monitored during the holiday.

New Offerings in Playwriting, Creative Writing Planned for 2010 Spring Semester Students at the University of the Virgin Islands are invited to develop their writing abilities during the upcoming spring semester with the help of two dynamic instructors. Those who accept the invitation will have a chance to explore different writing genres, encourage one another in the creative process and learn about flash fiction, a succinct form of storytelling that’s catching on in Latin and South America.
Author Opal Palmer Adisa, a frequent contributor to UVI’s annual publication, The Caribbean Writer, UVI’s anthology of Caribbean literature, is the scheduled instructor for ENG301 and ENG302. UVI Playwright-in-Residence Dr. Doug Larche is scheduled to teach the THE466.
Renowned Jamaican Author to Edit The Caribbean Writer The University of the Virgin Islands is proud to announce that Jamaican author Opal Palmer Adisa has been appointed editor of The Caribbean Writer, UVI’s anthology of Caribbean literature, which she, with her own talents, helped make famous. The works of this Caribbean poet, educator and author appear in more than 200 publications and have been praised as vivid and impassioned, filled with courage and integrity. Dr. Adisa, the author of 14 books, will join UVI faculty as a part-time instructor. She will teach creative writing at UVI in the spring.

ITS Newsletter Updates University Community UVI’s Information and Technology Services (ITS) Component has published the latest issue of the ITS Newsletter via email to the University community. The newsletter includes updates on a wide variety of services the Component provides to UVI students, faculty and staff. Among the items covered are a WiFi Update, a preview of the Campus EAI Portal Grant, survey results, and key card access to campus technology assets. The newsletter also includes stories on new ITS staffers, details on how UVI faculty and staff can access Microsoft software, and a follow up on the successful satellite connection linking UVI students with a research ship at sea.

UVI to Host Environmental Health and Safety Workshops Nov. 17 The University of the Virgin Islands will host a series of environmental health and safety workshops on Tuesday, Nov. 17, on its St. Thomas campus. The University is conducting the workshops as part of an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency which requires it to provide community outreach to schools and selected small businesses.
The workshops will take place over the course of the day. The morning session, from 9 a.m. to noon, will target schools and students on the junior high and secondary levels. The afternoon session, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., is for UVI faculty and staff. The evening session, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., is designed for specific elements of the small business community.

V.I. Board of Education Accepting Applications for 60 Nursing Scholarships UVI students and prospective UVI students who are interested in nursing as a career are advised that the V.I. Board of Education recently amended the qualifications for $400,000 in scholarships being funded by the Virgin Islands government. Scholarships will be offered for 30 students each in the St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix districts.
To qualify, students studying to be licensed practical nurses or registered nurses must: possess a grade point average of 2.5 or higher; be a resident of the territory; promise to work one to two years in the territory after completing their education; and be accepted into an accredited, licensed or Board of Education-approved institution.
The V.I. Board of Education is now accepting applications through Dec. 2 at their offices on Dronningens Gade on St. Thomas and the Sunny Isles Professional building on St. Croix. Details are also available by calling 774-4546 on St. Thomas or by calling 772-4144 on St. Croix.
EPSCoR Annual Conference to Focus on Integrating Science and Management The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) will present its annual one-day conference on Friday, Dec. 4, at UVI’s Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas. This year’s subject is Integrating Science and Management in Island Ecosystems.
The conference is designed to bring together scientists, natural resource managers and decision makers to address important, cross-cutting issues relevant to managing the Virgin Islands’ fragile island ecosystems. This dialog will allow natural and social scientists to better understand the data needs of resource managers, while at the same time helping resource managers and policymakers to better utilize scientific information and integrate it into their decision making processes. The goal of the conference is to help chart a course towards making better informed decisions in planning, designing and implementing regulations with people in mind.

UVI’s Hudspeth Publishes “The Power of a Learning Culture” UVI Assistant Professor of Management and Marketing Dr. Lonnie Hudspeth has announced the recent publication of a new book titled “The Power of a Learning Culture.” The 120-page book is subtitled “An Enabler of Strategic Responsiveness and Mass Customization Capabilities to Deliver Value to Customers.” It explores the strategic capabilities that U.S. manufacturers must acquire to in order to survive and thrive in an increasingly turbulent and competitive global environment.
Professor Hudspeth also serves as UVI’s director of Student Learning Outcomes Assessment. His book was published by Lambert Academic Publishing and is available on Amazon.com.
Reichhold Offers Payroll Deduction for UVI Employee Ticket Purchases UVI employees are encouraged to use payroll deductions to purchase tickets to Reichhold Center for the Arts shows. Employees should visit the Reichhold Ticket Office to sign an authorization form. This allows employees to spread the cost of tickets over four easy payments. For details, call 693-1559. Reichhold Center, Havana Blue Presenting ‘Havana Nights’ Salsa Dance Parties UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts and the Havana Blue Restaurant at Marriott’s Morningstar Beach Resort have partnered to present “Havana Nights” salsa dance parties on Saturday nights. The parties, which begin at 9:30 p.m., will conclude with a salsa dance contest at Havana Blue following the performance by Ballet Hispanico at the Reichhold Center on Nov. 21. Tickets for Ballet Hispanico are available from the Reichhold Center Box Office at 693-1559 or visit www.reichholdcenter.com on the Web. Reichhold to Host Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Hispanico in November The 2009-2010 season of UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts continues with two major productions in November. The Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and VI native mezzo-soprano Melita Etienne, as the featured vocalist, perform Saturday, Nov. 14. High-energy Latin dance follows Saturday, Nov. 21, with Ballet Hispanico taking the stage. Both shows begin at 8 p.m.
The Reichhold continues its longstanding partnership with The Forum in bringing the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra to the Virgin Islands. The evening will feature performances of Sibelius’ Spring Song, Op. 16, “Chausson’s Poeme de l’amoure et de la mer,” Op. 19, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3. The dance company Ballet Hispanico is known for its flamboyant and expressive style. Along with a portrait of 1950s Latin ballroom productions and a raucous tribute to Brazilian Carnival, the company will introduce the world premier of a new work performed to Latin jazz.

Rock Lounge to Feature Grant Haze and The Writer’s Block Students The next meeting of The Rock Lounge – an open mic experience of poetry, music, visual arts and creative expression – is scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Frenchtown Deli on St. Thomas. Featured will be singer, song-writer and portrait artist Grant Haze. Members of The Writer’s Block student creative writers from UVI will also perform. Agfair 2010 Planning Underway; Articles Sought for Agfair Booklet UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service Steering Committee is making plans for participation in the upcoming 39th Annual Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The fair will be held Feb. 13-15, 2010, on St. Croix. The Theme is “Healthy Food and a Safe Environment Make Sen$e.”
All UVI units planning to participate are advised that it is now time to plan their interactive and innovative exhibits. As one of the few times the University has a captive audience, this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the services offered to residents and visitors.
Program Needs Form: Please use this Program Needs Form to provide the necessary information for the committee to make final plans for the layout of exhibit space. Submission of this form also constitutes a Unit’s formal application to exhibit at the Fair.
Unit heads are also asked to encourage staff members to submit articles to be published in the 2010 Agfair Booklet. The deadline for articles is Dec. 3, 2009. Articles should reflect the theme. All are asked to take this opportunity to publicize the work of the university.

Submissions Sought for 24th Issue of The Caribbean Writer The Caribbean Writer is seeking submissions for its 24th edition. Besides the usual poetry, short fiction and personal essays, critical articles and insights on Trevor Rhone and Wayne Brown are specifically being sought for a special section. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30, 2009. The Caribbean should be central to submissions or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective.
Writers are encouraged to submit poems, short stories, personal essays and one-act plays. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. Youth Participants Sought for 4-H Groups’ 2010 St. Croix Festival Troupe The 4-H Program of UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service is looking for Virgin Islands children between the ages of five and 12 to become a part of a 4-H Festival Troupe that will participate in the 2010 St. Croix Christmas Festival Children’s Parade.
