Four Fall Research Symposium Winners Announced
Four UVI students – Shellese Cannonier, Mary Mootoo, Odari Thomas and Cherissre Tyrell-Boateng – are the winners of the University’s 11th Annual Fall Student Research Symposium. They were among more than 50 UVI students who presented the results of research conducted over the summer at the symposium which was held on Sept. 20, on the St. Thomas campus. The students’ research was conducted at UVI and other institutions nationwide. Student presentations were evaluated by a panel of judges from the community for scientific content and clarity of presentation. The winners will receive certificates at UVI’s Spring Academic Awards Ceremony.

The Division of Science and Mathematics, and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists program sponsored the symposium. Breast Cancer Awareness Week Activities Set Oct. 12-16 on St. Croix Campus
Students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Week activities scheduled on UVI’s St. Croix campus from Oct. 12-16. Each day has been assigned a different theme (see schedule). Events and presentations designed to increase the awareness of breast cancer are also scheduled at the Cafetorium from noon to 2 p.m., daily. SBDC on St. Thomas, St. Croix Plans Staff Development Oct. 13-16
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) offices on St. Croix at Sunshine Mall and on St. Thomas at Nisky Center will be closed for staff development and training from Tuesday, Oct. 13, through Friday, Oct. 16. Both offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Monday, Oct. 19. 4-H Food Sale Set Oct. 16 to Help Fund Participation in St. Croix Festival
The 4-H program operated by UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service on the St. Thomas campus is raising funds to support the group’s participation in the upcoming Christmas Festival on St. Croix. A food sale at the CES Office (located in the former UVI Business Office) is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 16. Delivery on campus will also be available to those who call ahead. BBQ chicken, tofu, mutton, fish, rice, macaroni, stuffing and vegetables will be available. For information, call Jacqueline Blyden at 693-1079.
Nursing Program to Host Accreditation Review Team Oct. 20-22 on St. Croix
The UVI Associate Degree Nursing Program has announced that it will host a site review for continuing accreditation of the program on the St. Croix campus. Team members of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) will make a site visit to the associate degree program for review and reaccreditation from Oct. 20-22.
Members of the general public are invited to meet the site-visit team and share comments about the program in person at a meeting scheduled for 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at UVI Nursing Complex, Building U-105, St. Croix campus.

St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Scheduled for Dec. 5-6
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Dec. 5 and 6, on the grounds of UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts, St. Thomas campus. The theme for this year’s fair is “Fresh Start – Grow Smart.” Applications for vendors wishing to participate are available from UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service Office and from the V.I. Department of Agriculture.

NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office
Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible. Modern Languages Area to Screen the Film ‘Casi Casi’ on Oct. 16
The Modern Language Area of UVI’s Division of Humanities and Social Studies will present the Spanish language film “Casi Casi” at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 16, in Chase Auditorium (B-110), on the St. Thomas campus. It is a Puerto Rican comedy that runs 93 minutes. The UVI community is invited to attend. Admission is $1. Drinks and snacks will be given away. For details, contact Prof. Mike Anders at 693-1353. The next film in the series – the powerful French film “Au Revoir Les Enfants” – will be offered on Nov. 20.
World Food Day Activities Set Oct. 18 on St. Croix
World Food Day activities will be held on the grounds of the St. Croix campus from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18. This year’s theme is: “Global Food Crisis: Opportunities, Responsibilities and Solutions.”
The Virgin Islands community is urged to come out and support junior high and senior high school students as they compete in the second World Food Day “Youth Super Chef Competition.” There will also be an open “Breadfruit Bonanza Cooking Competition” for the public. Entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. Categories are breads, desserts and side dishes. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries.
For the past 27 years, the UVI Cooperative Extension Service has taken the lead in providing educational workshops and interactive activities during World Food Day to encourage the planting of vegetables, fruits, and other food crops, thus, securing our own food security. VIUCEDD to Host 6th ‘Voices That Count’ Forum on Oct. 23
The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 6th annual “Voices That Count” policy forum at UVI on Oct. 21, on St. Croix and Oct. 23, on St. Thomas.
This is an annual, territory-wide forum that calls attention to the issues and concerns that people with disabilities face as they relate to education, public safety, accessibility and transportation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The theme for this year’s forum is “A Call for Action.”
On St. Croix, the forum will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21. It will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building. On St. Thomas, the forum will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. It will be held in the Administration and Conference Center. St. Thomas participants are asked to park at UVI’s Sports and Fitness Center and use shuttle services that will be provided.
There is no fee for conference participants, but space is limited on both islands. The deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 16. Down Syndrome Awareness Buddy Walks Planned on St. Thomas, St. Croix
October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. In observance of the month, a “Buddy Walks” are scheduled on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The St. Thomas walk is set for 3 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Four Winds Plaza. The walk on St. Croix, will take place at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12, at the Corner of Hannah’s Rest, in Frederiksted. For more information, contact VIUCEDD Program Director Shammi Carr at 693-1173.
Free Parent Advocacy Training Scheduled for Oct. 24 on St. Thomas
A three-hour, parent advocacy training session is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Sugar Estate Head Start building. The training is designed for parents of children with disabilities. It is sponsored by HUGS VI, Head Start, the Disability Rights Center and the UVI Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).
The training will cover such topics as, the dos and don’ts of advocating, how to be assertive and effective at your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting, strategies on how to help develop your child’s IEP, and ensuring a smooth transition of your child from high school to adult life after graduation.
