UVI to Sponsor Golden Jubilee Women’s Forum on March 29 The University of the Virgin Islands Division of Student Affairs will sponsor the second annual Women’s Leadership Forum from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, as part of the University’s 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee festivities. The forum will feature five UVI alumnae and their accomplishments in business, education, medicine, the military and the ministry. It will be available via videoconference between the Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus and the Great Hall on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Workshop on the Green Infrastructure Approach to Coastal Resilience Set March 30 The University of the Virgin Islands will host a NOAA Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The workshop is titled “Introducing Green Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience.”
This one-day course, led by NOAA Coastal Services Center staff, has been organized by first-year students of UVI’s Masters of Marine and Environmental Sciences graduate program. It will introduce participants to the fundamental green infrastructure concepts that play a critical role in making coastal communities more resilient to natural hazards. Through lectures, group discussions, and exercises, participants will identify natural assets in their communities that improve coastal resilience and will identify key stake-holders and planning processes that can support green infrastructure network design and protection. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Green infrastructure is described as a network of natural areas that benefit nature and people. The green infrastructure approach to community planning helps diverse community members come together to balance environmental and economic goals. Workshop participants become familiar with Green Infrastructure terms and concepts and the variety of contexts in which they are used.

Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition Set on St. Thomas for March 31 The Queen’s Committee of the UVI Student Government Association will present the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. The theme is “Past Meets the Present.” Tickets – $15 for UVI students, $20 general admission and $25 at the door – are available at UVI Bookstores on St. Croix and St. Thomas. Vying for the title are Contestant No. 1 Ivory Carter, Contestant No. 2 Latoya Rouse, Contestant No. 3 Najuma Dunn and Contestant No. 4 Raynyse Nesbitt. Prospective 2012 UVI Graduates Must Complete Exit Interview All prospective graduates of UVI’s Class of 2012 are asked to visit the Office of Institutional Advancement and complete a UVI Exit Interview. The interview is mandatory and focuses on the UVI experience.

UVI Libraries Schedule Saturday Hours in Advance of Final Exams UVI’s libraries on both campuses will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following Saturdays – March 31, April 14 and April 21 – to provide students with additional support for final exam preparation. UVI to Launch On-Line Mental Health Screening on St. Croix April 2 UVI will launch an On-Line Mental Health Screening service on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Monday, April 2. The launch is slated in the North West Wing Room 131 Lab for 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the UVI community are invited join in an interactive introduction to the On-Line Mental Health Screenings NOW Available on the Counseling Office website. This is a powerful new tool designed to help students according to Counseling and Career Services Supervisor Patricia Towal. For more information call 693-4187 or send e-mail to ptowal@uvi.edu.
Law Enforcement, Law School Career Days Slated at UVI April 3, 4 and 5; Public Invited UVI will be the place to be during the first week of April for anyone interested in a career in law enforcement or in attending law school. Recruitment fairs for law enforcement and law school are slated for April 3 and 5, respectively, on the St. Thomas campus. Both fairs will be offered on April 4 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
St. Thomas – On Tuesday, April 3, recruiters from 26 law enforcement agencies will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center. On Thursday, law school representatives will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., also in the Sports and Fitness Center.
St. Croix – On Wednesday, April 4, both recruitment fairs – with 26 law enforcement agencies and 11 law schools represented – will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Great Hall.

Horticultural Seminar Scheduled April 5 on St. Croix UVI’s Agricultural Experiment Station will sponsor a two-part seminar on horticultural subjects from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Dilip Nandwani and Vanessa Forbes of the AES Horticulture Program. Dr. Nandwani’s presentation is titled "Variety Trials of Taro (Colocasia spp.) in the American Pacific." Research Analyst Forbes’ presentation is titled "Growth & Yield Response of Four Tomato Varieties in the U.S. Virgin Islands." For more information, call 692-4020.
Golden Jubilee Premiere of ‘Kill the Rabbits’ Postponed to April 6 at UVI’s Little Theatre The UVI Golden Jubilee production of the world premiere of Tiphanie Yanique’s “Kill the Rabbits,” adapted and directed by David Edgecombe, has been postponed for one week. This will allow the author to attend opening night and answer questions from the audience. The play will now premiere at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 6, at the UVI Little Theatre on the University’s St. Thomas campus. Additional performances are scheduled for April 7-9 and April 12-15.
The Little Theatre, which has about 100 seats and was recently renovated, is located in the second floor of the CA Building. Tickets – $20 for the general public and $10 for students – are available from the Humanities Office of UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas. UVI 2012 Carnival Troupe Forming; UVI Community to Join the Fun Members of the UVI community as well as the general public are invited to participate in the University’s 2012 Carnival troupe. The troupe will march in the Carnival’s Adults Parade on April 28. This year UVI highlights and promotes the success of the University by celebrating its Golden Jubilee. The troupe’s theme is “Honoring Our Past for the World to See, Celebrating UVI’s Golden Jubilee.”

UVI Employee Service Awards Set April 10 on St. Croix, April 12 on St. Thomas UVI’s 38th Annual Employee Service Awards ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, at the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and Thursday, April 12, at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
The 2012 theme, in this Golden Jubilee year, is “Honoring Our Past – Creating Our Future.” The ceremonies will begin at 12:30 p.m. on both campuses and will include a buffet style lunch. A list of award recipients and additional information was shared with employees via email by the Human Resources Office. The deadline for submitting nominations for Employee of the Year 2012 is Wednesday, March 28. The deadline for submitting Service Awards Testimonials is Friday, March 30.
Spring 2012 Computer Literacy Exam Dates Registration for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exam (CLE) sessions at UVI is now available. Students must register for the CLE via Banweb. SGA Sets Spring Olympics 2012 for April 13-15 on St. Croix The St. Croix campus Student Government Association (SGA) will conduct Olympic-style games for students on April 13-15. Sports to be included are basketball, softball, swimming, obstacle course, tennis, table tennis, billiards, volleyball, bicycling, dominoes, dance and flag football. Internship Available for UVI Student at University of Guam UVI’s Agricultural Experiment Station has announced that it has funds from a Resident Instruction in the Insular Areas grant to send a student to the University of Guam for a three- to four-week internship in June 2012. The student should be interested in pursuing a career in agriculture, food sciences, environment and natural resources, or biology related sciences, but this is not required. All classes and materials will be offered in English. UVI students who have participated in this opportunity in the past are Akima George (internship at the University of Puerto Rico) and Luca LaPlace (internship at the University of Guam) and they both reported back that it was a good experience.
The course will run from June 4 through June 28. Interested students must be nominated by a faculty member and the student should send a letter of interest and explain how this opportunity would benefit their academic career to Dr. Bob Godfrey (Director AES, Professor – Animal Science,) rgodfre@uvi.edu by April 11, 2011. UVI Seeking Historic UVI Photos for Golden Jubilee Publication UVI is seeking historic photos from alumni, faculty, students and the general public for a book that will celebrate the University’s 50th Golden Jubilee. Examples would be photos from sporting events, class activities, dormitories and queen contests. Early photos from the 1960s through 1980s are especially needed. Clearly labeled originals should be brought to the UVI Public Relations Office, Room 229 of the Administration and Conference Center, on the St. Thomas campus, and to The Caribbean Writer office, on the St. Croix campus. They may also be mailed to UVI Public Relations, No. 2 John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas, V.I., 00802.
All photos will be returned. Please attach labels to the back of photos with contact, as well as complete descriptive, information.
