UVI to Close Jan. 17 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. While UVI’s libraries will be closed on Jan. 17, they will be open on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 16, from 1-8 p.m. the UVI computer labs – the 24/7 lab on St. Thomas and the NWW 120 Lab on St. Croix – will be available to students on the holiday.
Caribbean Writer 2011 Calendar Available at Discount Rate The Caribbean Writer’s 2011 Calendar “12 Months of Art and Poetry” are available at a discounted rate of $15, or two for $28. Even though the holidays are past, the calendars make great gifts for birthdays and anniversaries. Copies of the current issue of “The Caribbean Writer” anthology – Volume 24 – are also available for $20.

Dr. Hall to be Among DST Sorority’s Tribute To Trailblazers Honorees on Jan. 16 The St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will pay tribute to five dynamic and outstanding organizations in the Virgin Islands community and the individuals representing them at a reception at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Marriott’s Frenchman’s Reef Hotel and Beach Resort. Among the organizations to be honored are UVI’s Brothers With a Cause and UVI President Dr. David Hall. Other organizations to be honored are Kidscope Inc. (Dilsa Cadeville), HOPE Inc. (Ivy Moses), SPARKS (Shereese Jurgen and Attroney Judy M. Gomez), and the Young Professionals Network (Vernon Araujo and Carlah Malek). The reception is titled “DST: A Tribute to Trailblazers.”

Society of V.I. Historians to Hold 25th Annual Meeting Jan. 15 on St. Croix UVI Professor Emeritus Dr. Arnold Highfield and part time UVI Professor of Anthropology and History Dr. Betsy Rezende will be among the presenters at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians set for 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Government House in Christiansted, St. Croix. The meeting’s theme is “Celebrating the 275th Commemoration of Christiansted Town.” Drs. Highfield and Rezende are among seven presenters. Dr. Highfield will provide “An Overview of Christiansted Town.” Dr. Rezende will join Anna Walbom in presenting an “Historic Viewing of 20 Rare Photographs: 1860-1917.”
Other presenters include George F. Tyson (The Contributions of Africans to the Establishment of Christiansted Town), Poul Olsen (Fights, Frights and Fire Fighters: Social Conflict, Social Capital and the Christiansted Brand Corps) and Bill Cissel (The Military History of Christiansted Town).
A panel comprised of the historians and St. Croix National Park Service Superintendent Joel Tutein will address the theme: “Christiansted Town: Past and Future.” The meeting is funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. For more information, contact Dr. Altetha Baumann at 692-4178.
Speaker to Address Connections Between Math and Biology on Jan. 19 Dr. Louis Gross, a professor and researcher from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will present a talk – “What’s Math Got to Do With It? Connections Between Math and Biology.” – at UVI at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The presentation will be available in Business Building, Room 110, on the St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center, Room 713, on the St. Croix campus.
Dr. Gross is a James R. Cox, and Alvin and Sally Beaman Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Mathematics. He is the director of UT’s Institute for Environmental Modeling and also directs the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis. His research focuses on applications of mathematics and computational methods in many areas of ecology, including disease ecology, landscape ecology, spatial control for natural resource management, photosynthetic dynamics and the development of quantitative curricula for life science undergraduates.
Dr. Gross’ visit is supported by the National Science Foundation’s HBCU-UP program and coordinated by the Emerging Caribbean Scientists Program in UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics. For more information, contact Dr. Robert Stolz at rstolz@uvi.edu.
Boston University Early Medical School Program Presentation Set Jan. 21 at UVI Virgin Islands high school students with an interest in medical school careers are invited to attend a lecture by Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Boston University School of Medicine John Polk, M.D. Dr. Polk will discuss BU’s Early Medical School Selection Program from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21. The lecture will take place in first floor of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus, with a video conference link to the Theatre (Evans Center Room 401) on the St. Croix campus. Student interviews with Dr. Polk on Jan. 21 may be arranged by contacting Dr. Sandra Romano, UVI’s pre-health professions advisor, at 693-1389.
Students in the Boston University Early Medical School Program attend UVI and spend two summers and their senior year in Boston.
Free VIUCEDD Workshops for Siblings/Care Takers of Disabled Set for Feb. 7 and 9 Workshops for the siblings, family members, caretakers and service providers of persons with developmental and mental health disabilities will be offered at UVI on St. Thomas on Monday, Feb. 7, and on Wednesday, Feb. 9, on St. Croix. The workshops are hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands-Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).
Both sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The St. Thomas workshop will take place in UVI’s Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix the workshop will be held in the Great Hall, located in the North West Wing Building.
The workshops will address the specific concerns and the unique needs of siblings and family members. Continuing support and future care planning will also be covered.

Students Encouraged to Explore TMCF Scholarship Opportunities Interested UVI students are encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities organized by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and several national organizations. Specific opportunities are available to students who are also outstanding community leaders and who exemplify the values of volunteerism and service. The scholarships cover a variety of fields – business, finance, hospitality, tourism and ROTC programs. DOE, UVICELL Seeking Students for SAT Prep Course The V.I. Department of Education (DOE) in collaboration with the UVICELL Center is once again accepting applications for its Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep course. Interested applicants must submit applications to the UVI-CELL Center by Friday, Jan. 21, to be considered for the program.
The SAT Prep Course is free and is being sponsored by the V.I. Department of Education. The program is designed to improve SAT scores by lowering testing anxiety and improving test-taking skills. Applicants must be a public high school student on St. Thomas or St. Croix and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Weekday and Saturday classes will begin the week of Feb. 7 on both St. Croix and St. Thomas. Students accepted into the program must attend a mandatory orientation where they will receive the complete course schedule and other pertinent information. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to request an application, call 693-1106.
UVICELL to Offer Basic QuickBooks Training on St. Thomas The University of the Virgin Islands – Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use QuickBooks, the full-featured small business accounting software.
Introduction to QuickBooks will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Feb. 2, on the St. Thomas Campus. Participants will learn how to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

UVICELL to Offer Bookkeeping Course Beginning in March The University of the Virgin Islands – Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer courses for individuals interested in acquiring basic bookkeeping skills beginning in March on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
On St. Thomas, Intro to Bookkeeping will be held from 6-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday starting March 1, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 6-9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday starting March 2, at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted.
Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and much more.
