Bermudez-Ruiz, Award Winning Director, Signs Producer’s Rep Deal

St. Croix native Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz, award-winning director and producer of the feature-length documentary "Sugar Pathways," has recently signed a distribution deal with United Films, a Los Angeles based film producer’s rep company that has produced seven award-winning independent films. United Films and Connell Creations will work to get "Sugar Pathways" broadcast on national television.
"United Films is very excited about our recent acquisition of ‘Sugar Pathways.’ We think it is a moving story that will touch a wide audience and shed light on a little known cultural migration," said Brent Madison, Connell Creations Inc./United Films.
"Sugar Pathways" tells the riveting story of the unwilling migration by Puerto Rican families from the small Caribbean island of Vieques to the U.S. Virgin Islands. This powerful and vibrant film recounts their will to survive the journey, integrate and contribute to the culture, economy and politics of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The documentary is narrated by actress Lauren Vélez of the Emmy Award-winning Showtime series "Dexter."
Congresswoman Donna M. Christensen with the help of Diageo U.S.V.I., the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus held a very successful reception and film screening of "Sugar Pathways" at Washington, D.C. Capitol Hill Orientation Theater.
Since that screening "Sugar Pathways" has been seen throughout the world. It has premiered at Rincon Film Festival, Bermuda International Film Festival, Peru International Film Festival, Tribeca Cinemas, Maysles Cinemas, and was nominated for best documentary produced by a female director.
Born and raised in St. Croix, Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz heads Cane Bay Films LLC, an independent production company dedicated to producing high-quality, impacting documentaries, films and public service announcements (PSAs) on economic strategies, investigative reports, educational and preventative topics, environmental issues, and contemporary social issues for distribution over diverse media.
