Gwendolyn Chase Burke Dies in Florida

Gwendolyn Chase Burke, RN, BSN, of Estate Anna’s Hope died on Thursday, April 10, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was 79 years old.
She was preceded in death by her son, Atty. Calvin D. Burke Jr., grandson, Allen D. Burke; stepson, Kevin D. Burke; aunt: Isabella Burke; sister-in-law, Gloria Burke; and identical twin sister, Evelyn Williams
She is survived by her sons: Dr. Glenwood Charles Sr., Alvin D. Burke Sr. and Robert D. Burke; daughters: Carol M. Burke, Carolyn M. Burke and Maureen Burke-Ventura; grandchildren: Shamar Charles-Johnson, Noelani Charles-Brannon and Glenwood Charles Jr., Ronel, Ronae, Andre and Ronique Burke, Nyisha, Sherraine, Alvin, Rishaun, Risheema, A’Jada, Callende and Caleb Burke, Darnley Petersen III, Shane I. M. Hodge, Angel Ventura III, Shamiyah Burke and Ramon Peguero; great-grandchildren: Kyrone, Kyrell, Kyraun and Kylani Burke, Mikayla and Olivia Johnson, Kyon Gonsales and Kyneil Anderson, Amari Lockhart, J’nyia and J’nae Finch, A’ryia Davis, Omani and Bomani Christian, Devante and Darnley Petersen, Silas I. M. Hodge, Andre Burke Jr. and Amir Burke, Ky’Nai Christian, Anaizjah Dennis and Ajani Petersen; and former spouse, Calvin D. Burke Sr.
She is also survived by sisters: Thelma Battiste, Merle McWatt (N.Y.) and Ecilma Trant (N.Y.); brothers: Peter Trant (Ga.) and Valdemar Jackson; nieces and nephews: Patricia Williams, Merissa Williams, Letiticia Williams-Hurley, Ophelia Nemmy Williams-Jackson, Galen Williams, Natasha Williams-Modeste, Michelle, Lisa and Angela McWatt, Andrea and Ashton Battiste, Francine Smith, Melissa Nunez, Samantha Wilson, Erika, Felicia and Jamie Trant, Vernon Jr., Ihante, Nedra and Elka Chase, Melba, Denise, Rhonda, Raynelle, Rebe, Reisa, Ronice and Ralna Jackson; daughters-in-law: Marsha Charles and Patrice Canton; sister-in-law, Artha Lee “Mickey” Trant; granddaughters-in-law: Delisha Burke and Jennine Petersen; grandsons-in-law: Ryan Johnson and Thomas Brannon; and nephews-in-law: Joseph Smith, Valance Modeste and Raphael Jackson Jr.
Other survivors include godchildren: Almeric Messer and Hubert “Catalyst” Alexander; special family and friends: Euclid and Marilyn Lynch, James Maynard, Magdeline Hobson, Jeanette Sergent of the Retired Nurses Association of St. Croix Inc., Keith Francois, Louis Hendricks, Stacey Plaskett, Luis “Tito” Morales, Condon Goodwin and Fa. Angel Ventura Jr., Zelma Horsford, Winifred Canton and Fa. Yvonne Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Jean Vivot and Fa. Laurel Kiture, Atty. Arturo Watlington and Fa., Raphael Corniero, Sheniqua Robinson, Connie Brown, Luke Holt, Nursing students at CTEC, Pastor Vincente Gordon and Fa. Ms. Wilson, Mr. Mitchell, Vida Chinnery, Emily Westby, Ann Williams, Henry Laws, Paul Arnold Sr., Father and Mrs. Richard Abbot; the Woodrup, Acosta, Petersen, Lynch, Heidmann, Messer, Maynard, Canton, Hodge, Charles and Hansen families, and Estate Anna’s Hope families and friends; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A viewing will take place at 9 a.m. and a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, at St. Luke A.M.E Church in Estate Grove. Interment will follow at Christiansted Cemetery.
