Three events are slated for the opening of the school year – V.I. Fathers Back to School Barbecue and Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27; the Back to School Days of Prayer on Saturday , Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4; and the V.I. Fathers March on Sept. 6, the first day of school for public schools in the territory. Organizers are encouraging fathers to take their children back to school starting on the first day.

Territories to Receive $126 Million-Plus for Zika fight

Congress budgeted $1.1 billion to fight the Zika virus in legislation approved Wednesday to fund the government through December, with more than $126 million allocated to the territories.

Homeschoolers Want Legislative Remedy

The U.S. Virgin Islands Homeschoolers (USVIH) are asking the public to help them by contacting the V.I. Legislature and telling senators to vote for a bill that would transfer oversight of home schooling from the V.I. Board of Education to the Senate.

Matthew Becomes Hurricane; NWS Warns of Rip Currents

Matthew became the fifth hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season Thursday afternoon and though the storm has already passed south of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the National Weather Service continued to warn residents of the territory of the risk of rip currents.

Winifred O’Reilly Dies at 93

Winifred O’Reilly

The family of the late Winifred O’Reilly is saddened to announce her passing on Sept. 29, 2013. She was born on May 21, 1920.
She was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Patricia “Patty Ann.” She is survived by her sons: Brian, John and Stephanus; stepson, Sean O’Reilly; grandchildren: Brain II, Cinnamon, Candice, Stephen, Brandon, Blaire and Stephanie; great-grandchildren: Khalil and Rashad; stepsisters: Louise O’Reilly and Doris Williams; and daughters-in-law: Nellie, Arleen and Ireene.
She is also survived by nieces: Barbara Venetis, Sylvia Gibbs, Sandra O’Reilly, Coreen Hughes, Yvonne Tyson (Fla.) and Ethlyn Tyson (England); nephews: Roland James (Texas), Howard Daniels (Col.), Tony Tyson (Fla.), Craig James (Texas) and Ray Pemberton; godchild, Sherraine Venetis; special friends: Millie DeChabert, Andrea Stephenson, “Aunt” Leona Watson and Gladys Rohlsen; special families: the Smiths, Gordons and Messers of Newton, the Bradys, Benjamins, Bogans, Maccows, Ortizes, Simmondses, McIntoshes, Felixes and Lindseys of Mon-Bijou.
Special thank you to Pastor Vessup and his wife, and the Richmond Senior Center -- in particular, Evelyn Frazer.
Winifred was a loving, kind and gentle soul who touched many people. She will be sorely missed.
A viewing will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Calvary Baptist Church, 90A Upper Love. Interment will be at Frederiksted Cemetery.
