For 44 items surveyed in the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs’ Food Basket Survey, St. Croix’s Sunshine Supermarket came in with the lowest price.
Sunshine carried a price tag of $117.90 for the 44 items compared to Plaza Extra’s $121.71 and Pueblo’s $128.70.
On St. Thomas, Plaza Extra reported the lowest price — $75.19 — on 31 survey items followed by Pueblo in Subbase at $79.37.
DCLA officials say savings can be realized if people shop around. They said a pound of Land-O-Lakes butter goes for $3.69 at Sunshine, $4.79 at Plaza Extra and $5.59 at Pueblo in Golden Rock.
On St. Thomas Plaza Extra sells a half-gallon of St. Thomas Dairies ice cream for $4.99 while Pueblo’s price is a $1.40 more expensive.
DCLA Commissioner Andrew Rutnik said shoppers should use coupons and specials to save money.
