Claire L. Roker Is Running for Delegate

May 30, 2007 – The Virgin Islands is my home and we the people can now make history if we, decide this time to write our own Constitution. When I think that we had four previous attempts to write our constitution before, I wonder what went wrong and why couldn’t this have been done before 2007. However, it is what it is and we should definitely take the opportunity to make this happen.
If I am given the opportunity to be one of the Delegates, I am certain that I will make a valuable contribution by focusing on issues and concerns that are most prevalent in shaping such an important document.
Having worked in both private and public sector, it has afforded me an opportunity to interact with Virgin Islanders on all levels. One of my basic goals will be to reach out and encourage our young Virgin Island voters to become actively involved in the development of a document that will determine our future. We need to define, who we are, and what we are, without alienating other individuals who have come to the Virgin Islands to make it their home.
My second goal as a delegate would be to work towards developing a document that facilitates changes in the current government structure that would increase excellent customer service to all deserving citizens. The document should incorporate more of our culture in our education system. We need to concentrate more on our Environment issues and have better Health Care. Last, but not least, give our Police Department more resources, materials and funds that will enable them to do a better job.
Claire L. Roker is my name, I am #17 on the ballot, dedicated, loyal and committed. My life here at home has afforded me the opportunity to be productive in many areas: Asst. Director of Tourism, Director of Tourism and Asst. Commissioner of Tourism, it has also given me the privilege to be involved with several organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce, Our Town Frederiksted, Frederiksted Economic Development Association, Women’s Coalition, Girl Scouts of America, American Cancer Society (St. Croix Chapter), VIPR Friendship Committee, Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, V.I. Tourism Council, St. Croix Cruzan Christmas Festival Organization, Miss America Outstanding Teen Scholarship Competition and thirty-five (35) years with Hal Jackson’s Virgin Islands Talented Teen a Scholarship Competition and many more community organization that I freely give of myself without cost.
It is very important for me to listen to the people about their needs, especially the young people who this document will affect the most. “MAYBE WE WILL GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME”.
