When calamity strikes, we extend a helping hand. The fact is, God forbid, many of us are only a couple paychecks away from homelessness. But if or when that happens, there is a place where people can get a hot meal, or a clean bed and shower as they regroup to recoup their independence.
That place is Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands. We have three
soup kitchens; two 30-day homeless shelters and outreach programs that benefit the homeless. However, because of the downturn in the economy, cut-backs in our funds and donations, we are concerned that we won’t have sufficient funds to extend a helping hand.
So what are we to do? How many solicitation letters can we write to the same people time and time again asking for money and telling of the good work we do?
Well, we have decided to be bold. To take matters into our own hands and host the Virgin Islands first International Festival of Food; set for
Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Croix’s Agricultural Fair Grounds. Admission is only $1 and children under 12 are free!
We invite you and your family to come out and experience delicious
cuisines from all over the world. More than 20 vendors have already signed on to offer delectable treats from Hawaii, Trinidad, Italy, Israel, Mexico, St. Lucia and New Orleans, to name a few.
There will be live entertainment featuring Stanley and the 10 Sleepless
Knights, Mada Niles, Crucian Dance Company, Cherise King, Myrna Pickard, King Derby, UMB Solders, Junior P, and Xhkaliba who will be donating their time for a worthy cause. We are also planning a farmer’s market where farmers can sell their fresh produce, a book fair – Food for the Soul -- where you can meet local authors who will read and sign their books. And we will have our very own flea market selling brand new clothes priced from 50 cents to $5.
This exciting event will benefit the homeless and protect struggling
families from the perils of homelessness.
Last year we served more than 49,726 hot meals; provided more than 14,536 nights of shelter and clothed more than 2,000 individuals. Indeed, for the past 50 years, Catholic Charities has been a safety net for hundreds of Virgin Islands residents. We serve whoever needs help, whenever they need help.
So please join us Sunday, August 12, 2012, on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love, St. Croix. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will begin the day with an opening prayer and praise. So come and enjoy a wonderful feast of food for the mind, body and soul. Or, tell me, would you prefer a solicitation letter?
