The final pair of concerts in the St. Croix Landmarks Society's Music at Whim series this season comes on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7. Performing will be four members of an exceptionally musical family – Marc Johnson on cello, Katherine Johnson on piano, and their daughters Kirsten Johnson on viola and Nicole Johnson also on cello.
Marc Johnson is a member of the famed Vermeer Quartet, whose most recent CD album was nominated for a Grammy award. While a student at the Eastman School of Music, he became the youngest member ever of the Rochester Philharmonic.
Katherine Johnson, who also studied at the Eastman School, has taught for 26 years at the Music Institute of Chicago and is the author of the primer "Accompanying the Violin."
Kirsten Johnson made her solo debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 17 and has also performed with the Juilliard Symphony. She won first prize in the the 1997 Washington International Competition at the Kennedy Center.
Nicole Johnson, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, is a member of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and the New World Symphony.
The Whim concert program is the same both nights, with the musicians performing works in varying combinations. It will open with a Beethoven duet, "With Two Eyeglasses Obbligato," to be followed by Requiem, Op. 66, by D. Popper and the Chopin Introduction and Polonaise Brilliante, Op. 3. Following intermission, the second half of the evening's offerings will consist of Handel's Sonata in G Minor, Op. 2, No. 8; the Sonata in C Major by L. Boccherini; Duo by J. Barriere; and the J.S. Bach Concerto in C Minor, S. 1060.
With the performances by the Johnsons, the "candlelight concert series" in the Whim Museum Greathouse concludes its 15th year. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $22 for Landmarks Society members. Reservations may be made by calling 772-0598.
