ARTISTS GET OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW IN P.R. MUSUEM

April 23, 2001 – Plans are being laid for what would be the first-ever group showing of paintings by Virgin Islands artists in a Puerto Rico art museum.
The V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute has taken the lead as main sponsor and coordinator of the exhibition, which is being planned for February 2002 at the Museo de las Americas in Old San Juan. According to a release from the institute, participation will be open to "all Virgin Islands artists of long standing."
A committee consisting of three Puerto Rican art professionals will select the works to be included in the show. Artists wishing to be considered must submit slides of their work to the institute no later than Sept. 1.
Details about the project will be presented at a meeting to be held at 5 p.m. on May 10 in the Cultural Heritage Institute offices, located at 5-6 Kongens Gade (also known as Education Street) on St. Thomas. Interested artists are encouraged to be present or to be represented by someone who can pass the information on to them, according to Janet Cook-Rutnik, institute secretary. Those planning to attend the meeting and/or wishing additional information are asked to call institute coordinator Lisanne Turnbull at 774-9537.
"The financial and logistical details of this exhibition will be discussed at this important meeting," Cook-Rutnik said.
An invitation from the Old San Juan museum to mount such an exhibition came about as a result of a presentation made to its directors by Cook-Rutnik, who had a solo show there in November of 1999.
The institute will be seeking grant support from the V.I. Council on the Arts to mount the exhibition, she said.
